Question: I'm thinking of converting to Catholicism, but my parents are Adventist. What do I do?

Most likely, your parents taught you to put God first. Why then do we find it so difficult to do? We have a commitment to God and a commitment to our families, and when we are asked to make a decision that can upset one of them, it can be hard.

As I am sure you would agree the right decision isn’t always the easy one. The simple truth is, however, that you need to put God first and do what you know is right, this is what we called to do over and over again in Scripture. I understand that you love and value your parents, and would not want to do anything that would hurt them. Perhaps you even worry about losing their love or acceptance. I’ve been there. The fact is if they love you, nothing you can do will change that, although it may take some time for them to get use to the decision you have made.

On your spiritual journey, remember that the decisions you make will be with you always.  If you died tomorrow, do you think you would have rather lived your life for God or for your family?  Who knows… perhaps your choice will help them make the same decision in the future.  You may better serve your parents doing what God would wants you to do. I do feel for you, just remember you’re never alone, God is always there, and so are we, the church.  There are also those of us that contribute to this site who have been in the same or in similar situations in which you find yourself right now. Don’t hesitate to seek these people out for advice, companionship, and solace.  May peace find you during this complicated time!

Thank you for your question,

Brandon Ogden
